Pecos Valley Medical Center With country western music, cowboy boots and a cuisine of down home Mexican food, Pony Up! had it all. The rural community of Pecos, New Mexico has taken medical services into their own hands by providing comprehensive primary and emergency care where there were no doctors. This annual fundraiser brought in over $51,000 this year towards the expansion of their vision. A bamboo meditation bench from Northern Naturals was auctioned off in support of this most amazing testimony of what a small community can accomplish. A big salute goes out to staff and organizers of this event! AsiaNepal’s Center for Community Development and Research CCODER’s ongoing mission has been to serve people in undeveloped rural areas of Nepal, with the goals of ending poverty, seeding hope, and fostering personal development and leadership capacities. Dr. Govinda Dhital, CCODER’s Founding Father, developed a strategic plan has utilized what is called The Tripod Model, which gives equal focus to education, socioeconomic development and organization structure at the village level. This bottom up model is intended to increase each villager’s access to education, health care, and employment. CCODER’S guiding values are that each person can become the master of his or her own destiny, that the development which CCODER supports is essential to the development of democratic infrastructures, and that individual growth can only occur in a democratic society. There is no other comprehensive model in all of Nepal that has had the success and outreach that CCODER has accomplished. Bodhi Tree Educational Foundation Bodhgaya India is one of the poorest regions of India. The Bodhi Tree Foundation’s mission is to serve this area with the development of community schools, vocational training, health care and community development with a particular focus on uplifting the lives of young girls and women. AfricaKiva Northern Naturals recently made a donation to Kiva.org. Many of you may know of Kiva's work with micro lending around the world. We are supporting Goreth, a 39-year old widow in Bujumbura who supports her six children. She is a seamstress and part of the Dusengedukore Community Group. She will be using her funds to expand her line of clothing and to buy fabric. Uganda’s Nserester Complex Inspired by the vision of Rev. Isaac Nsereko, The Nserester Complex houses, feeds, educates and trains 842 Ugandan Orphans. This Complex has transformed education from the traditional academic model of instruction, to a more integrated vocational approach. From Farming to Business each child graduates with a skill and gives back to the community that raised them. This is an extraordinary complex of love, education and hope. Kenya’s International Peace Initiatives
Dr.Karambu Ringera, inspired by a group of women living with HIV/AIDS, began International Peace Initiatives (IPI) in Kenya in 2002. It is dedicated to supporting and funding initiatives that mitigate the effects of poverty, disease, discrimination and violence. IPI provides Homes for orphans, supports African grassroots organizations and community leaders, and provides trainings in peace education and conflict resolution. The IPI tools are education, enterprise and empowerment.
