More About Our Down Comforters

I am learning a whole lot about the down industry and it is most exciting. Down is that soft, luscious undercoating of waterfowl. Down insulates them against icy cold conditions so why not us? The quality of the down depends on the climate where the geese are raised. In cold climates the geese there produce the largest down cluster available, thus providing the highest insulation power.

Well, this makes total sense. The down industry is filled with information, like the term fill power. This is the measure of loft in a product, the higher the fill power the better the loft and fluffiness. An excellent fill power rating is 750+, and only the down from mature geese will give you that fill power rating. Young geese raised for their meat produce a have much lower fill power down.

Prices of down products reflect the variation in fill power or loft. Down works as an insulator because of how the cluster trap air. The larger the cluster the more air it can trap and the greater the loft and warmth it provides. Fascinating stuff.
